July 30 Well!Well! What a busy day we've had! The kids have played outside all day, and Hannah seems to have aquired an imaginary friend called Rachael. She became very distressed when Louis stood on Rachael.
I checked on the ferrets first thing this morning, something that I don't usually do. I found that their tyre and tunnel had fallen of the shelf and Rocco was inside. The poor boy probably spent the night in there! No harm done, he ate a hearty breakfast and is now back to his usual grumpy self.
Ziggy had his first excursion outside as I was fed up of the choreography of opening and closing doors to stop him escaping. He dashed off and was gone for 15-20 minutes before he calmly leaped back in the window and demanded more dinner.
And I have 'phoned round the Mum's for our night out, only to be asked to leave messages on everyone's answerphones.
But it did lead to my 'phone ringing...
ME: Hello?
GIRL ON PHONE: Hello?
ME: Hello?
(you know how this one goes!)
GIRL: Why did you call?
ME: Huh? Why did I call?
GIRL: Yes, why did you call?
ME: I don't know, who are you?
GIRL: Bethany.
ME: Oh. I didn't call you. Sorry.
GIRL: OH!
ME:Bye then!
GIRL: (Hangs up)
Kept me entertained for ages! Finally figured out it must be the daughter of one of the ladies I called. Not calling back!
![]() glitter-graphics.com July 28 Ziggy!Thank you for all your suggestions for names, we have finally settled on the name Ziggy. It really suits him! He has been flying madly around the house, hissing at the dogs and clawing at the carpets. I went out and bought him a scratching toy and he has looked at in disgust. Typical cat. Now that he's had a rest on the windowsill he's on a mad half hour, attacking one of the childrens' shoes and a toy dog. That'll show it!
We went to Party in the Park today at Rother Valley, and got mobbed by geese. Thr hubs ran away. Louis found a feather and seemed intent on giving it back to a goose; any goose!
So now the kids are exhausted, and I'm off to watch a DVD. Thanks Jim!
![]() July 26 The Good, The Bad, And The...Cat?I dropped in to the Sanctuary earlier to have a chat and see if there were any cats that might want a home with us. As usual, I didn't come away empty handed! Our new addition is a victim of the floods, a black and white male cat around 10 months old. He's settling in really well but still needs a new name. Spot just doesn't do it for us!
On returning home, I got a call from the Sanctuary. They had finally recieved the results of Chloe's tests. The good news is that the breast cancer was benign. The bad news is that whatever is in her mouth is extreemely nasty, and the vet asked permission to remove half of Chloe's nose. Permission denied! We are all in agreement that it would not be the right thing to do for her and would not improver her quality of life. So now all we can do is wait and see what becomes of it.
Now the cat is trying to catch flies, and Hannah is trying to think of names. Not easy for a 3 year old. She thinks he could be called Lisa...
I'm off to put the kids to bed, if anyone has good male cat names, let me know! Mum's Night OutTonight was the Mum's night out with toddler group. I went to the last one, but as I had just joined the group, I was terrified! This time, I know most people, and as I am now quite outgoing in my personality I managed to get chatting to everyone.
Unfortunately, I have alway's been terrible with names. So I knew, Lucy's Mum, Lois' Mum and Keenan's Mum, buttheir names were another matter. How to solve the problem? Easy. Give them a piece of paper to write their 'phone numbers on, with the promise that I would organise another night out! All numbers came with names attached, and I knew who I was talking to all night!
We got talking about school life, and it appears that most people were bullied at school one way or another. After sharing my memories of school-yard bullying, one of the Mums that I hardly know came and took my hands, and said "all those people that picked on you won't have as many friends as you do now".
I could have cried, I was so happy. I'm so lucky to know the people that I do now, they are all lovely, and no-one could have said anything nicer to me.
If it hadn't been for the bullies, I would never have left school at 17, never have met my husband and never have had my children. What have I got to complain about, really?
So anyway, it's up to me to arrange the next night out. We're going 'downtown' for a proper knees-up, and nearly everyone can manage a Saturday. With plenty of notice. And no-one want a meal beforehand. I've got lots of ringing around to do!
![]() glitter-graphics.com July 24 Hairdye And KittensI'm sitting here with a towel around my shoulders and stripey dye on my head. Yes, that's right, you can now buy stripey dye.
I'm hoping against hope that 1) this turns out OK, and 2) I can wash the dye off my fingers and claim I got it done at a hairdressers!
It's the toddler group meal tomorrow night, a chance for the Mums to go out and socialise (get drunk) without the kids being there. Which is why I'm trying to glam up my locks a bit. And I hate hairdressers, so that leaves me to traipse around the shops looking for the perfect hairdye (at the perfect cost). And then dye my hands and head while trying to apply it to my hair.
Hannah wandered into the bathroom while I was putting it on and announced that maybe I should have taken all my clothes off. I'm not quite that bad at it!
Anyway, in other news, I have found a wonderfully scatterbrained farmer who has some kittens for sale. The only problem is that they have gone to his next door neighbours and disappeared amongst the pallets. There are 2 ginger and 2 tabby but he doesn't know what sex they are as he can't catch them. I'm going to call back later to see if they have made their way home.
Right, I'm off to wash this gunk off my head, and probably go to the shops to find something to repair the damage! Will let you know the results... July 22 Goodbye KittyThe kitten I was supposed to be getting, had named and was looking forward to has gone to someone else. Despite having said she would hang onto it for two weeks for me, her breeder gave her away after just one week. Try explaining that to a 3 year old.
I feel like I have lost another pet. And as I am still waiting on Chloe's lab results, it seems like things aren't going well at the moment. We're back to the vet's tomorrow so I might be feeling better after that.

"AND YET YOU HAVE THE NERVE TO CALL ME COLOURED!" THE BLACK MAN TURNED BACK AROUND AND THE WHITE MAN WALKED AWAY COPY THIS INTO YOUR SPACE AND HELP STOP RACISM!! Chloe Again, And Our Trip OutYesterday morning was a mad rush. The kids had to be up, dressed and fed, and Chloe had to be at the vet's for 9am. And the vet's is 15 miles away. And it was rush hour. And Chloe is not the best traveller in the world!
However, we arrived in time and booked her in. There was some confusion over her name, as they had her listed as Chloe Foster. I tried to explain that she was a foster dog from the sanctuary but eventually gave up and became Mrs Foster for the day. That done we headed off for the next job of the day.
That happened to be Louis' trip out with his baby sign class, to the rare breeds centre near us. No-one from our class turned up, except the teacher, so I trailed around after her other class and tried to get the kids in on the action. The staff at the centre were great, bringing baby ducks, rabbits and chickens out for the children to stroke. Unfortunately, a sudden downpour forced us all into the cafe, so we had to have a cuppa!
Once home I called the vet tofind out how Chlo was, and she was ready to pick up at 4.30pm. Now, I pick the hubs up at around 5.15pm, so I figured if I got to the vet's for 4.15 I could get back in the hour. Ha!
4.13pm saw us sitting in the waiting room. So did 4.30pm, and 4.45pm. Finally I (Mrs Foster) was called and I enterd the treatment room to find Chloe leaping all over the nurse's foot. Apparently she had been fast asleep half an hour before so I could have sneaked her into the car without her noticing!
Anyway, the lump has been cut out, a sample taken from the growth in her mouth and an x-ray done to ensure there is no damage to her jaw. Now all I have to do is take her for her check up on Monday and hope the lab results are ready.
I did discover that in the year we have had the dog she has lost 14kg in weight, to be nearly normal now. Well, I say normal... Lol!
Oh, and I didn't make it back in the hour, in case you hadn't already guessed. I left the vets at 5pm, and travelled nearly 20 miles to pick up the hubs. I got there 10 minutes late, which I didn't think was bad going really!
![]() July 15 UpdateFirst of all, a quick bit about Chloe. Blood and urine samples surprisingly good for a dog her age, and she is going in to the vet's on Wednesday for the lump removing. While she is under anaesthetic the lump in her mouth will be checked out and then we might know what we're really up against.
Apart from that, I was very excited on Friday to find a pair of wild rabbits in my field. I'm not a rabbit person, but I love to watch them in the wild. I sneeked down the field behind Winston, who wondered what on Earth I was up to. I got to within 3 metres of them and they were still nibbling at the grass and playing together. They were obviously aware of me but not bothered by my presence. I got to watch their courtship ritual, but apparently the female really was playing hard to get and wondered off after a while leaving the male to eat his tea.
I was so cross at myself for not having brought the camera, so on Saturday night I was prepared. I arrived at the field a little later than usual and there was no sign of the rabbits. Typical. But then a movement caught my eye, and I turned around to find a fox bobbing under the fence. She looked at me with her coal black eyes and I switched the camera on. She ducked back under the fence out of my eyeline and I thought I'd lost her. As I moved nearer I discovered she had actually stopped for a quick wee! Not scared of me then. Just as I got her into focus on the camera screen she silently vanished through the trees.
I will be carrying my camera around with me now to see what I can find. Watch this space!
![]() July 12 Chloe: Part III promised an update on Chloe so here goes.
It always seems worse when a vet has actually said the words that you are expecting anyway. But let me start from the beginning.
I know that the trip to the sanctuary only takes about 15 minutes but I always give myself half an hour. So I set off in plenty of time and reached the road that the sanctuary is on in 15 minutes, only to be met with a diversion sign. Not too much of an issue until half way around I was confronted by a car accident and several police officers directing traffic. Panicking because I didn't recognise that part of the road, I turned right. And found myself back where I started. Following the diversion signs again I was convinced I must have missed a turn-off. And once again ended up where I started. The police must have started to wonder what I was up to so I figured they were my best bet. As a policewoman waved me through the junction, I wound down the window, explained I was lost and asked for the sanctuary. She shrugged and answered, "I don't know, I'm directing traffic. Ask someone else!". Helpful. But I did as she said and asked the next policewoman. She suggested I turn around and go back, and as I tried to explain that I was already going around in circles, she started to back away. I took this as the end of the conversation and continued down the road in the direction I was now pointing. And found the sanctuary. About 100 metres from where the police were. And they hadn't noticed.
Anyway, back to Chloe. She was very excited to see everyone, and they were all pleased to see her looking well and happy. I took her in to the vet and told her how Chloe has been, while she examined the dog. Lots of questions were asked and the vet eventally straigtened up, looked me in the eye and said just what I expected her to say.
Chloe has cancer.
She also has a lump in her mouth, that is something or nothing, but probably something, and a problem with her kidneys.
On the plus side, they want urine samples (fun), blood tests and x-rays so that they can do something about it. Everyone is very optimistic about her future but I will wait to see what happens tomorrow when she returns for her tests doing.
![]() July 09 ChloeI've been a little concerned about my spare dog lately so I 'phoned the sanctuary and arranged for her to see the vet.
Chloe is drinking vast amounts of water, then peeing on my carpet, which isn't like her at all. When I got her she had a small lump in her mouth and I have noticed it growing in the last couple of days. Then, last night, I absently reached down to tickle her and to my horror found a large lump hidden in her flabby tummy.
So the trip to the vet has now become a little more urgent and neccessary. I keep hoping that it isn't anything too serious, but sense tells me that at 11 years old, this dog has had a good innings.
It was through no fault of her own, or her owners, that she came to me from the sanctuary and I know that she has had a very happy life. I will let you know what happens at the vets on Thursday.
![]() July 07 Highfields Adventure PlaygroundIt was a massive birthday party at Hihgfields Adventure Playground today, it has been on that site for 25 years. The hubs played there when he was a little boy, and yes, the photo's were there to prove it!
I can't believe the dedication and love that goes into it from the staff, all 3 of them! It is open all year round, term time and holidays, and the children generally just bring themselves along to play. It is entirely funded by the council, but they don't do much to help out.
Back in the day, the kids would go for days out, picnicing, horse riding or even camping. Now, just a walk around the park would first require a risk assessment being carried out, and a certain number of trained carers to each group of children. The paperwork is killing the place.
Anyway, back to the celebrations. It was a reunion for people that hadn't seen each other for years, making the ones that were missing all the more noticeable. The Lord and Lady Mayor turned up with a photographer, and Han managed to get right in the front of one of the photo's. They had a look around, shook hands with some people and cut the celebration cake. I don't think they'd even heard of the playground before. Watching the children throwing themselves around joyously on the bouncy castle the Lord Mayor asked the hubs, "Are they having fun?". Umm, I think so!
So congratulations to Gloria for sticking it out all these years, it's no wonder the children respect her so much, she has so much love and understanding to give to each and every one of them. And to the rest of the workers, we haven't forgotten you, keep up the good work, and here's to the next 25 years!
![]() July 03 Hello KittyThere's going to be a new addition to my family, a little kitty! She is just 4 weeks old at the moment, a flufft white ball with black patches. Her sisters are calico, and already had homes, but she needed a home and I wanted a cat. Tough decision...what to do...didn't really take much thinking about, especially after I had cuddled her.
Time to start stocking up on cat litter and food. And a new scratching post. Oh no, I'm starting a list! I really don't need that much, I have all the stuff left over from Lucy still.
So nowKitty needs a name, something original and individual. No Snowballs or Chalkies here please! My other pets have had 'unusual' names; Gwydion, Ozymandias andSibelius, along with Mouse and Fox, neither of which were a mouse or a fox!
Answers on a postcard please, or if it's any easier, just post them in the comments box. All suggestions will be carefully considered. Have fun!
