June 30 Naming TimeIt’s been difficult to choose names for the baby ferrets, firstly because I wasn’t sure that they would survive and secondly because I like unusual names for my animals. In the past I have used Arthurian names, musically inspired names, and Egyptian names as well as several other random names in between. I was going to continue the Egyptian theme, but decided instead to go with a Greek So, welcome… Morpheus and Khaos; the boys and Artemis, Gaia and Persephone; the girls. I have lots of photos of them but most show just a tangle of fur and legs. I will try to post some individual pictures now that Istnofret is relaxing more with them. The babies are starting to open their eyes, and, much to Istnofret’s consternation, regularly wiggle out of their bed to explore the hutch and find tasty morsels to eat. Rocco, on the other hand, is miserable. He has not been allowed back into the main hutch yet as he is quite an aggressive male, and he is bored on his own. Next week he is going for the snip, which will calm him down and allow me to put him back in with his family. It’s going to be great to have a large group (or business) of ferrets again, I did fear that I was loosing the chance to continue my breed line and Istnofret and Rocco would become my last two. But these little guys are doing well, their personalities are shining through already and I am looking forward to watching them grow up. Watch this space! June 25 Employment ends....Now!So, the Hubs' work phone rings at 7.45 yesterday morning for him to go out on a callout. He duly dresses in his hi-viz and jumps in his lorry to rescue the broken down van stacked high with cakes.
I made his sandwiches ready for when he returned to the depot and logged on to check the bank, it being pay-day. Nothing.
Thent he post arrived. Pay slip first. Accompanied by a letter suggesting that because the customers haven't paid their bills, the company has no money to pay their staff. They plan to pay half his wages on Friday (2 days late) and the other half the following Friday.
Then came a handwritten envelope, addresses to the Hubs. Well, I open his post anyway so I pulled out another letter from his employers that says as from this date (24th June, which it was) the Hubs services were no longer required by the compnay and they wish him all the best for the future. Could he please return his mobile, fuel card and hi-viz wear to the depot?
I called him and explained the contents of the letter, to which the Hubs replied "So what do I do now?". My suggestion? Stop the truck, get out, and I'll come and fetch you. So he did. And I did.
When will companies learn not to sack drivers while they are driving?
Why did they call him out if they knew he wasn't employed from that date?
And why did they expect him to bring their truck back?
I t did not state on the letter that he had to return the truck, just the mobile, fuel card and hi-viz.
Each truck is fitted with a tracker, which the company are very keen on using to trace drivers to dock wages if they are in the wrong place at the wrong time. However, the trackers are not quite calibrated correctly, so the Hubs hid the truck (out of the way so it couldn't be stolen ) in the back corner of an industrial estate and let the company recover their own vehicle. It apparently took an hour and a half to find it, although it was only a 15 drive away from the depot!
So now he is back to job hunting, trying to find something that doesn't put him back in a garage as a mechanic. June 23 Our Walk...I was going to tell you about our lovely walk in Shirebrook Valley. The kids took their bikes and we stopped to look at the millions of tadpoles and damselflies.
Unfortunately, it was marred by a car being dumped and set alight on the road just outside the valley, where we needed to walk to get our car.
I called the fire brigade and the road was blocked off by police. It very quickly became apparent that this was not just a joyrider who had burnt out a stolen car.
We had to walk for nearly an hour to get around the cordoned off area and I have since had a phone call from the Violent Crime division who want to come out and get a statement of what I saw. problem is, I didn't actually see anything. Just a burning car. But they want more details so I'm now waiting on them turning up.
I will let you know more if I get any answers myself... June 15 Lost Dog15th June 2009
Jasper is missing due to the thunderstorm this morning. He has never been gone so long, it's now been 10 hours.
I have called the dog warden (open 9 - 5 mon - fri) the RSPCA (10 - 4, mon - fri, except wed) and posted up on the biker forum.
Jasper is a white collie cross with blue merle patches.
He has a torn ear and is wearing a tatty brown leather collar.
His eyes are part coloured, blue and brown.
He is microchipped and neutered.
Not Much HappeningIt's been non-stop here, but nothing really worth telling you lot about!
Debs, we are in the middle of a thunderstorm
Istnofret has been doing really well with the babies. they are just over 2 weeks old now. I thought she had three, but then I got a glimpse of a fourth. It was so exciting!
Yesterday she moved them (her hutch is huge and she has several 'safe' places in it) because they were wearing her out by wriggling out of the bed. She put them in an upturned tunnel so they can't escape. I hopped in (yes, I can get in the hutch!) to check everone had moved across alright, and I found....
Baby 1 - white female
Baby 2 - white male (runt)
Baby 3 - black female
Baby 4 - black male
AND....
Baby 5!!!! - silver female.
They are all in great health and Istnofret is doing a wonderful job of looking after them.
I went up to Thornberry sanctuary yesterday to groom a couple of dogs, and ended up doing 4. They were all very good, but one was extremely nervous, especially around men, and one wouldn't let me dry her at all. I just chucked her back outside in the sunshine to dry!
My hayfever is driving me mad; nothing seems to work against it this year.
Oh and for you peeps that werre worried about me (thank you
So thats pretty much it, except that swine flu has just hit at the school where I used to teach karate, so we now wait to see if it moves across to this side of sunny Sheffield... June 07 Relaxing RideI took Friday off. The Hubs was at home and he took charge of the children while I went out on my bike with a friend.
We had a great day, travelled through glorious countryside in lovely weather and stopped for chips at our destination; Matlock Bath.
It was really good to have some time off to just think about me.
June 03 DisjointedThere are so many things going on in my world at the moment, I don't even know where to start. My thoughts skip from one subject to another; my mind making connections between them that no one else could hope to guess at. So... Squeakings from the hutch, Do I see the doctor, or do I let nature take it's course? I feel fine, but the advice was to go back and get more tests, more tests. Dogs need grooming, two to do as soon as I can, been waiting for weeks. My own all need baths.
Wiring needs looking at on the bike, the brake light isn't working properly. Steering lock needs re-fitting, clutch needs adjusting. Supposed to be riding out to Matlock on Friday. Car wants washing, washers on rear window need filling up, starter motor needs looking at.
Alfie is having his feet done tomorrow, got no hope of catching him easily, then he's going to go mental.
I need more stuff for my hayfever, my usual has been removed from the market and the replacement doesn't work. Chemists tomorrow, if I have time. So did you follow any of that? It doesn't matter, maybe just putting it on paper (or on screen) might help me to organise it. |
